Monastery Mgvimevi, Chiatura

Beautiful monastery etched into the mountainside. A small staircase on a road leads to it. Very easy to miss. The contrast between this lovely little chapel in the industrial sites in front is impressive. If you are in the vicinity, do come and see.

Get your legs ready for a bit of an uphill climb but it is made easy by beautiful steps and platforms to rest on your way up. Stunning views over the city below.

It is worth a visit. There is a climb from the level of the road (probably about 60 m vertical elevation) but the path is easy to navigate if you are not frail or elderly. The cave where the altar is, is refreshingly cool in summer. Entrance is free.

Gelati Monastery. Spectacular frescoes in this church and the other one that are set in grounds near Kutaisi. It's a pleasant walk there from town or you can take a marshrutka, a van. It's a lovely day out and it was very quiet and peaceful when I went in November. Recommended by every person bi talked to in Kutaisi.

Mgvimevi convent is from the 13th century. a monastery located in the valley of the Qvirila River. Driving along the mountain road along the huge cliffs, the monastery suddenly appeared in the ridge of the rock, the walls of which were illuminated by the evening sun. I pulled into a gas station and talked to a local resident to figure out how to get there and see this beauty. We were shown a narrow path with steps leading to the top of the cliff and the climb began! To get to the entrance door of the monastery, you had to go up narrow metal steps, but the further way to the monastery led through a tunnel cut in the rocks. The main prayer cell of this monastery is located in a naturally formed cave. The cave also has its own spring, which constantly flows from its ceiling and flows underground. I saw such a monastery for the first time in Georgia. There is also a church with ancient 13th century buildings partially built into the cave. wall drawings. This inaccessible monastery was used as a place of refuge by people during medieval wars. This monastery is admirable both for its powerful energy and for its unusual location and architecture. If you are interested in seeing the ancient holy places, then it should definitely be included in the sightseeing itinerary. I'm excited about what I saw!
