Create an itinerary including David Gareja Monastery
The Orthodox David Gareja Monastery complex conceals hundreds of cells, churches, and monks' quarters, hollowed out in a rocky mountain verge. In this semi-desert setting you can see shepherds herding their flock and birds of prey hunting, while the monks pick wild herbs emerging from rocky pathways. Visit the monastery and its quarters, and climb a hill from which you can see both Georgia and Azerbaijan. Look for the tomb of St. David Garejeli, the Assyrian monk who founded the complex in the 6th century. The climate at this site can be harsh, so bring warm clothes and have enough food and water for lengthy walks. To find out how to plan a trip to Udabno, use our trip itinerary maker.

  • Great place relatively close to Tbilisi. An important historical testimony of the past and present of this marvellous country. It is possible to go in and around and up the hill. I would recommend to go by with an English speaking driver who can tell and describe the importance of the place (price for European tourists should not be so high and negociable) There is also a fantastic view over the Rainbow Hills and a shop where to buy beautiful souvenirs made by the monks. It is absolutely worth a visit.
  • This a must to visit in Georgia on the guides, papers and internet. Unfortunately it was a deception for me: most area was unallowed to visit because monks privacy. Too long trip for so little to see. I visited in January. May be in spring or summer would be possible to visiting more places in the monastery.
  • The road to David Gareji is stunningly beautiful, admiring such landscapes, you willy-nilly catch flashbacks from memories from Altai and Tajikistan, as well as Tuscany and Scotland. A place where time goes slowly. You don't want to talk at all, you want to breathethere. Definitely a place of power and divine beauty.
  • Beautiful, stunning monastery. Road to it leads through colorful rainbow-coloured mountains and the building itself are inhabited by few monks. There are tourist toilets and a shop in which you can buy tasty wine and icons. "Must see" if you happen to travel in Georgia by car.
  • Beautiful gem at the end of the Earth. Going via Google maps from Tbilisi the road is unpaved (but very pleasant offroading experience with great views if you have a AWD vehicle). The monastery is small and seems to have been slightly fortified in the earlier ages. You can walk the walls a bit and a few terraces. There are cute stairs leading from one level to the next carved in a cave-like formation. The church/chapel is very small and perfectly fit the climate of the place. Toilet is clean, but toilet paper quality still remembers 1980s.
