Sitting next to the cathedral in Aachen's old town, the impressive was built in the early 14th century after taking over the ruined palace of Charlemagne. The building is emblematic of the civic freedom of the townspeople of Aachen. Its architectural foundations are Gothic, with Baroque elements added during the 17th and 18th centuries following the Great Fire of Aachen. On the north facade, you can see 50 statues of German rulers, 31 of whom were crowned in Aachen. Inside the building, check out the 19th-century Rethel frescoes in the Coronation Hall, as well as a collection of royal treasures and copies of the Imperial Crown Jewels. To avoid disappointment, check for state closure dates on the city's website before visiting.
