Create an itinerary including Bamberg Altstadt
With buildings from as far back as the 11th century, Bamberg Altstadt has a remarkably intact core. You can see an interesting mixture of Baroque style and a quintessential old German feel at this site on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Look for the 13th-century cathedral, the 14th-century town hall, and the city castle. Several bridges connect the different streets and neighborhoods by way of a small island. Be sure to try the area's famous Rauchbier--a brew with an interesting smoked flavor. For a deeper look into the old town's history, pay a visit to the Benedictine monastery's small museum. Bamberg Altstadt is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , custom trip planner Edition.

  • A wonderful walking city that is gorgeous. The river, the architecture styles, the friendly shops and markets are great and the bakeries are marvelous. Feldbaum book store is a noteworthy stop.

  • Wow what life in this old town, not many get here it's great. We were near the top just below the church, had a beer and chips and watched people go by, really good life to the place. Should have spent more time here but had to keep going
  • A 09th century town with preserved medieval streets, walls and historic buildings. Also known as Franconian Rome, is a UNESCO world heritage site. Absolutely recommended to visit and at least stay one evening. It is an amazing, romantic, beautiful lovely small town always bustling with people with many bars and pubs around. Completely picturesque and vibrant with something for everyone. Absolutely worth all the time you will spend here.
  • The most classical German city you can ever imagine. The old town is very big and well preserved. A must-visit spot when staying in Bayern. For eating I can recommend Schlenkerla brewery, a mind blowing beer tavern. With the ancient streets, cathedrals, water canals and taverns, you feel like you've been gone back to the middle ages. Do not miss this place if you love German culture and tradition.
  • One of Viking River Cruise stop. I am glad to see this town that dates back to the 9th century. The medieval streets and buildings are well preserved and of the greatest landmark is the medieval old town hall that was built on an artificial island in the middle of Regnitz River. It is also known as the “Town hall on the bridge”. After the tour of the town we tried the local beer at the town plaza and observed people passing by while waiting for our bus to go back to our ship.
  • One of the nicest old towns in Germany. Great to visit if you are in larger cities nearby like Nürnberg or Frankfurt. Lots of lovely old architecture and old timbered framed houses. Plenty of nice cafes and shops to visit. It can get very busy, so if it’s possible it’s best to get there early and explore the main sights in the early morning. The absolute main sights not to miss are the Altes Rathaus and the Domplatz with the Neue Residenz!
