Solemn and meaningful, the memorial at Gleis 17, Grunewald commemorates the deportation of some 50,000 Jews from this site between 1941 and 1945. At first, the trains departing from here carried their human cargo to the ghettos of Litzmannstadt and Warsaw. But starting in 1942, their route included stops at the Auschwitz and Theresienstadt concentrations camps. Regardless of their destination, most of the trains departed from the historic track 17. The monument now standing in this spot was opened in 1998 and is made up of 186 steel bars embedded in the gravel along the track. These bars refer to the number of transports that left Berlin. Inscribed on them are the dates of departures, the number of deportees, and the train's ultimate route. Using our world travel planner, Berlin attractions like Gleis 17, Grunewald can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Hard to say we “enjoyed” the visit here, but as a memorial this is so well done. Easy to get to via the S-Bahn, get off at Grünewald.
