The 15th-century Romer has served as Frankfurt's city hall for nearly 600 years. The building's major tourist attraction is its best-known room--Emperor Hall--on the second floor. This was the setting for the coronation banquets during the Holy Roman Empire. One of the city's major landmarks, this medieval building once belonged to the wealthy Romer family. They sold it to the city in 1405. The entire three-story complex occupies about 10,000 sq m (108,000 sq ft), with nine buildings encircling six courtyards. The front of the building, featuring the city hall's main entrance, faces a large public square. You can see a vast collection of 19th-century portraits of emperors here. Look especially for works by renowned artist Eduard Von Steinle. Quickly create a custom-made itinerary for Frankfurt using our trip planner.

  • Charming, picturesque town square in Frankfurt. I started my sightseeing activities in Römerberg during my visit to Frankfurt in February 2023. Definitely worth visiting.

  • Place was beautiful and loads to do. Shops and cafes and restarant where all amazing and staff friendly. Was out of season so things all closed by 8pm.

  • Lovely place to walk around, soak up the atmosphere, and take note of the great buildings. Many great restaurants and bars to enjoy German food and drink.

  • The beautiful and picturesque old town is a must visit when in Frankfurt! Amazing half-timbered buildings that were once completely destroyed by Allied powers’ bombings during WWII, now rebuilt to their full glory! Drink your coffee or beer in one of the numerous cafes and beer houses on the square, admire the architecture, take photos and travel back in time with your imagination! 100% recommended!
  • It's one of the best if not the best town squares I've ever visited in Germany. A lot of cafés around to sit around and enjoy the old town square in it's full glory. If you want to avoid the crowd, visit it early in the morning to click a beautiful panorama.
  • Lovely indeed. Beautiful, peaceful and refreshing for me. I found nice coffee as well around and a good Indian sovereign outlet…
  • Absolutely stunning! A 20 minute walk from the train station which makes it perfect for those traveling without a car.
  • A very authentic German experience. We could see out onto the courtyard from the upper floor through original windows. Lots of locals came to enjoy generous portions of sausages etc. Just what we hoped for. Also timely and courteous
