You can cross the Elbe river 24 m (80 ft) below the water's surface through Alter Elbtunnel. This subterranean tunnel, constructed in 1911, connects the city center of Hamburg with the dock and shipyard district of the south banks. Inside the tunnel, you can admire the collection of glazed ceramic motifs. Walk through to the south side of the river for impressive views of the cityscape and surrounding area. Pedestrians and bicyclists can use the tunnel 24 hours a day. Motor traffic is restricted to certain hours. Realisticallky I think this is a 3 1/2 star venue. Its interesting to experience but not a must do in my opinion. We walked it on a cold December morning and not surprisingly it wasn't very bisy...

This is worth a visit. The walk is about a 1000m walk to the other side and back. Highy recommended, if you need a break for the christmas markets :)

Huge, historic tunnel. Definitely worth seeing, and walking the distance that goes under the waterway. We went during a weekday, which I believe accounts for it being the amount of busy to educate yourself on how the locals utilize the tunnel, but not so busy that the the paths is immovable. The stairs and elevator up and down, give you a good feel to just how deep the tunnel goes. And yes, if you want to bike it, there is a special elevator for the bikers as well as one for pedestrians. The stairs are manageable too if you don't have a fear of heights. Just be mindful of the bikers pedestrians.

Wow, it is impressive to know that this tunnel was built more than 100 years ago. This mysterious tunnel connects central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards on the south side of the river Elbe. I used the stairs (less than 5 minutes walk down) instead of elevators. I saw people riding bicycles in the tunnels and some even walking with dogs……interesting place to visit…..

A must go place. The lift takes you down, and is huge. The tunnel is approximately 500 meters long and you can easily walk or take a bike there. It is open for public, but do mind the Lift stops at 20:00 and after that You will have to take the stairs which could really be tiring. The tunnel is sometimes cold so make sure you wear an overcoat when you get in there. The view of the city from the port side is really amazing. Must go place if you are in Hamburg.

On the way down, it was better not to take the elevator, which is especially popular with cyclists, and to descend the impressive-sometimes frightening stairs. Of course, we waited for the elevator on the way out. Worth seeing.

Interesting, historical tunnel to get from central Hamburg to the docks and shipyards on the other side. The old lifts are super cool. Worth walking through the tunnel to the other side where you'll get a lovely view of Hamburg.
