Built in 1935 by Albert Speer, architect to Adolf Hitler, Thingstatte was an amphitheater originally used as a site for Nazi rallies and meetings. It is now preserved as a monument, but it's used for many events and festivals throughout the year. Several paths lead up the hill, and you can stop at several other sights along the way. You'll pass the ruins of an old monastery, an old well, and a lookout tower for views of the city and castle below. A beer garden at the top provides refreshments after the hike up. If you want to spare your legs, you can drive up; plenty of parking is available. Plan your visit to Thingstatte and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Heidelberg attractions planning website.

We drove up to the monument using address of the restaurant supplied here. It was very misty so that added to the atmosphere. Our little dog loved running up and down the steps 😊 You need to see it..... more

Very nice place to visit. The hike up is not that bad as it’s covered by trees.
-
Such an amazing place, highly recommended especially in summer or spring. you need to go through the woods to reach the open doors theater, so maybe it is a good idea to have your friends along.
-
Literally the best hike you can go in Heidelberg and certainly one of the best spots of the town.
-
After medium difficulty hike enjoy this ancient Greek style theater built in the 30s. From there you can also visit ruins of st Michael monastery
