Admire a late Romanesque wooden crucifix, the oldest piece of art in the city, at St. Nicholas Church (Nikolaikirche). Built in the 12th century and enlarged in the 16th, the church blends Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Marvel at the interior's mighty columns (designed to resemble palms) and ornamental ceiling. Admire the 30 paintings by Leipzig local Adam Friedrich Oeser. The church rose to fame in 1989 during the Monday Demonstrations' peaceful protests against communist rule. The church is very beautiful, the neoclassical interior with ornate columns and pastel shades is stunning. Also there is the history with Bach, and of the important part the church played in the events leading to the Berlin Wall being taken down. There is an exhibition about this, but all in German - we wished there was an English translation but there are some great pictures. Highly recommend a visit here, and please do pay the 2 euros for the photography permit as they are struggling to raise funds for the upkeep of the building 🙂

Great church and definitely worse a visit but there photography policy inside the church is a joke. You can’t take photos inside without paying 2€ but only there. The Thomas church not far from there is free and you can take as many photos as you want, what a money grab for no real reason.

It’s a highly historical place for the German reunification. It’s the place where protests were located and German people in the GDR gathered to stand up against the socialist regime. It’s a must see when in Leipzig! It’s free to visit but 3 Euro for pictures. It’s wonderfully renovated and colourful. Sometimes you even have the possibility to listen to concerts.

The place is very beautiful I'm here during Christmas Market and it was lovely It is a good place to go with family. Very religious and strict, people actually are praying in this place, so you shoud be quiet. Also you don't have rights to take photos of inside.
-
The movement of East German started here. very historical place. when you can visit here, almost church is closed. you should check open hour. you can attend a worship with pipe organ music.
