Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig, a state-run museum about post-World War II Germany, brings history alive with artifacts, photos, text, and videos in a condensed, well-curated exhibition space. Learn about the history leading up to the division of Germany, everyday life under the communist dictatorship of the German Democratic Republic, and the reunification process, as well as the lasting effects of the division. Though the exhibit is in German, an English information booklet is available. With our custom trip planner, Leipzig attractions like Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

One of the truly great museums of Europe, better than the Louvre IMO and its free. Covers East German history, everyday life, government surveillance and protests and unification with the BRD. Almost all exhibits have English translations or subtitles. Other museums in the former DDR also have these types of exhibits but like the one in Berlin, their exhibits are more geared to the nostalgic elements of DDR life. The third floor contains topical changing exhibits. When I was there, they had an exhibit on the expanding use of computers in our lives. Given the surveillance under the DDR, (see the Stasi museum in Berlin for an excellent presentation of this) this exhibit is an understandable warning about the possibilities of government overreach into the personal lives of its people. Included in this exhibit is an example of the Social Credit system in China. It is described only in German but try translating it to see the absurd Chinese government attempts at behavior modification. One way to score more points is to praise the government on social media. You will lose points if you do not visit your parents often enough. There will be consequences for those Chinese citizens with low social credit scores.

One of the best educational, fun and immersive museums I have been to. It is free to enter and the first level is all about life in the GDR. The third level is another space where they had a digital expo which was also fantastic. The staff throughout the museum were so lovely and helpful.

Very interesting do dive into not so old history. The exposition is well prepared - one could spend hours to observe and enjoy (sometimes it's not possible to enjoy as one knows people were living those lifes) everything.

Very nice exhibit of German history pre WW2 to today. Free entrance. Not to be missed

Wow. This is the museum to see in Leipzig. Fascinating. Free. Those who don't speak German will have a bit more trouble, but there are some English translations here and there. I spent 3 hours here and certainly skipped parts. Very well presented. Very fair. And did I mention free?!!!!
