Located in the heart of Munich's pedestrian area, St. Michael's Church is the largest Renaissance church north of the Alps and features the second-largest vaulted ceiling in the world, after St. Peter's in Rome. The Jesuit church, built between 1583 and 1587, was conceived as a spiritual center for the Counter Reformation. Duke of Bavaria William V pulled down 87 houses in the center of Munich to bring this ambitious project to life. The building's style largely influenced Southern Germany's early Baroque architecture. Between the two entrances, look for one of the church's most famous monuments: the large bronze statue of the Archangel Michael fighting a demon. Inside, you'll be in awe of the barrel-vaulted roof, which spans more than 20 m (65 ft). The vaulted ceiling is quite impressive. We visited 5 of Ludwig II castles so had to see his final resting place.

I visited inside the church on Christmas Eve on December 24, 2022, it was a nice atmosphere, and they let the door open for all visitors. I found that almost all humans need God to strengthen their souls.

Largest Renaissance Jesuitical church with lots of sculptures and paintings. A St.Micheal statue with a well for holy water welcomes you at the entrance and then you walk through history of architecture until you reach a burial place for royal Bavarian family under the church with entrance of 2 euros.

Very large church. Spent some time here indoors.

It was hard to tell that the building was a church because of its front. It was quite different from other churches but did look quite different from the other places in the area. It is located between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz. The multiple statues and golden writing was quite eye-catching. There is also quite a nice statue of St. Michael by the entrances of the church. The inside is similar to other churches in that it has very high ceilings. The designs of the ceilings inside here is quite nice, as are the walls and myriad of murals. The golden altar at the end of the church was huge and very nice. There is a mural in the middle and it almost reaches the roof of the church. There is a crucifix with our lady at the base by the entrance to the altar area. It is a really nice church which was free to go in.
