Create an itinerary including LVR-Archaologischer Park Xanten
Walk through the ancient Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana at LVR-Archaologischer Park Xanten, Germany's biggest archaeological open-air museum. The town was established as a Roman military camp in 12 BCE, but, unfortunately, nothing remains from those times. Luckily, excavators and archaeologists have redesigned the major buildings in the park to the scale and architectural precision of the Roman originals. See the harbor temple, the amphitheater, the city walls and gates, and Roman houses as they would have appeared in their original places. A ticket to the park also gets you into the Roman Museum, which gives a history of the Roman life in the Lower Rhine area and contains the remains of the Town Baths. • A great and detailed reconstruction of the ancient Roman city "Colonia Ulpia Traiana" (CUT). The park covers many different parts of Roman life and contains a lot of buildings with information boards. Our group had a tour guide who took us through the most important stations of the park (in German) and I can only recommend that. Nice lady who knew her topic very well and made everything exciting for children. A must-visit for every Latin student!
  • One of the most beautiful and well created archeological site. The park is really huge. In trip advisor and various other review sites, people talk about spending nearly 3hrs here. Well, you need atleast a day to really feel and understand the history behind this place. The park could be entered through multiple entries which are primarily the 3 active gates of the park. The main attractions in the park are Hafentempel, Roemer Museum, Amphitheater and the walls and towers near the Amphitheater. There is a windmill in the middle of the park. It is converted into cafe and they don't allow people to go up to view from the terrace which is shame. Apart from that the entire archeological park is must see! It is only 800m from the railway station.
  • Very big park on a historical site where the past is brought back to the present. I hope much more will be excavated and many more buildings reconstructed. Becouse what has been done is very much like the real deal with a very great kwality. Like the northern gate and the amphitheater are my personal favorites. Definitely worth a visit if you like history.
  • LVR Archaeological Park Xanten in Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum invites you to an exciting excursion into history. Impressive buildings such as the harbor temple and the amphitheater, residential buildings and bathing facilities provide vivid insights into life in Roman Germania. In addition, the award-winning LVR-RömerMuseum, excavations and activities to participate offer a variety of incentives to approach Roman times with all your senses. For children, the meadows and large playgrounds offer many opportunities to let off steam and discover. Good value for money and reasonably priced selection of food, drinks coffee also fair prices. Really good place for kids. Playing area very clean and beautiful 😻 my kids and other kids also really enjoyed! Thank you so much for your good maintenance.
  • Quite and peaceful place. Be prepared to spend at least half a day here. Also be ready to walk a lot. Must visit if you are in and around Xanten.
