Create an itinerary including Akrotiri
Set your clock back a few thousand years with a visit to Akrotiri, a Minoan Bronze Age settlement destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption around 1627 BCE. The volcanic ash buried the remains of many everyday objects used by the settlement's inhabitants, preserving for posterity the ancient way of life of a long-lost culture. Some historians suggest this archeological site, once an important port city on the Aegean, served as an inspiration for Plato's story of Atlantis, a supposedly fictional place mentioned in two of the philosopher's major works. To gain a better understanding of the lost community, take a guided tour around the excavation site. You can plan Akrotiri trip in no time by asking Klarna Trips to help create your itinerary.

  • Very interesting for fans of history but many might not appreciate the lack of monuments or exceptional art. This was a highly advanced bronze age civilization with plenty of well preserved artifacts and buildings - but no pyramid like monuments like the Egyptians who were their contemporaries.
  • It's well kept site even though its many years ago . Fee is 12€ per person and its worth it . We had a tour guide and it was helpful to us. Travelers make sure you pass through this place its very accessible by car .
  • Amazing living history, definitely worth a visit. Speak to the curators who work there, they are very knowledgeable and can tell you so much about the site, and other facts about Santorini. Loved our visit!
  • If you love history, it’s hard to pass up the Minoan ruins. Perhaps the very inspiration behind the stories of Atlantis, the very magnet atmosphere of this site can be felt as soon as you step inside. The history of the site draws you in, the sheer scale of the buildings being excavated is unbelievable given their age. I cannot recommend a visit to this site enough. One could easily stand there in awe for days.
  • Interesting place with options for guided or self-guided tours. Takes about 1-1.5 hours to walk through depending interest level. Bathrooms and facilities were clean. Crowds were too bad in May. Masks were still required (and provided)even though the guidelines were officially lifted. When you’re finished, walk down to the water and eat at Melina’s. It was perfect!
