The largest of Athens' many museums, National Archaeological Museum houses a vast collection of ancient artifacts unearthed from a variety of excavation sites around Greece. The museum's world-famous Mycenaean collection includes the 19th century finds by archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, featuring golden funerary masks, relief stelae, alabaster tools, ivory carvings, and jewelry. The museum also displays a staggering array of ancient figurines, frescoes from the volcanic island of Santorini, and the oldest known mechanical computer, designed to predict astronomical positions and eclipses. There's so much to see here, it may take you several visits to absorb it all. Make your trip through ancient history a bit more comprehensible by arranging for a guided tour of the museum's most representative exhibits. National Archaeological Museum is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , international travel planner Edition.

You don’t need to hire a guide just get a guide book and most will include a tour of this museum focusing on the key items. Takes about 2 hrs. We visited with 2 young kids and had a great time.

We quite enjoyed our stay here. We came as a family and already had our tickets booked. We also had an audio tour guide booked trough get your Guide. That worked quite good and we were able to spent a nice afternoon looking at the expositions. The museum is quite big and is lovely organized. The small garden was quite lovely as well.

Wow. If there is one thing to do in Athens besides visiting the Acropolis, it is this museum. This is filled with tons of rare artifacts and knowledge about the entire history of Greece. You can see beautiful statues starting from Ancient Greek all the way up to the Roman period. They have an incredible display of items that easily should take you several hours to review in full. I also highly suggest going to their cafe at the end for some excellent coffee.

This was quite a beautiful museum. It costs €12 per adult, students under 25yrs are €5. It took us about 4 hours to work through the whole two story building. It has so many beautiful statues, weapons, vases and jewelry going all the way back to 3000 BC.

One of most important spots in Athens! I would recommend to spend half of the day here. Very interesting collection and so much things to explore. The museum's garden cafe are also nice place to chill / take a break from walking. The coffee and bakery are nothing special but the garden is very lovely - worth to visit.

Good peak into the history of ancient Greek civilization through their exhibits and artifacts. If you have only time to visit one museum in Athens and you want to get a glimpse into ancient history of all the different civilizations then this is the museum you should visit. You can check out the notable highlights in a couple of hours. The plaques are not very informative though, so better to take an audio guide or a guided tour.
