Create an itinerary including Museum of Prehistoric Thira
Featuring artifacts uncovered on the island, Museum of Prehistoric Thira represents Thira's prehistoric centuries with artifacts excavated from nearby Akrotiri and Potamos. Items are divided into four units representing: the history of research, Thira’s geology, the history of the island between the late Neolithic to late Cycladic Period I, and the city’s peak at Akrotiri. Examine pottery and marble figurines that are thousands of years old, and see the changes in pottery as Thira progressed through the centuries. The artifacts from Thira’s heyday paint a picture of how Therans lived in the 17th century BCE. • Excellent exhibition, well presented and informative, even our young children (7 and 10 years) showed interest in the history of the area. It is open, but the toilets were not unfortunately.

  • An spectacular archaeological collection - particularly of Minoan pottery, figurines, and (most especially) frescoes. The museum could do with a bit better signposting - you can very easily miss the spectacular fresco collection in the basement as there seem to be absolutely no signs telling you there's anything downstairs. And this would be a tragedy as the fresco exhibition is very well done with an attempt to arrange the frescoes as they were situated in context so you can appreciate how they functioned as wall decorations.
  • Small, but packed with finds from the excavation of Akrotiri. Beautiful pottery and amazing frescoes from so long ago it boggles the mind it’s still visible. Make sure to go downstairs where you can see larger fresco panels.
  • This is such a great museum! The ceramics are from 17th Century BC and they’re still in such impeccable shape. The frescos are so vivid and unique, and the art style is so distinct to ancient Thera. Truly amazing colors and motifs. Well worth the stop for any history buff!
  • The  entrance costs 6€ and I highly recommend it if you have or are going to visit Akrotiri. It is located right in front of the local buses station. Most of the exhibited pieces are from the Neolithic village destroyed by the volcanic eruption. It is amazing how some of the pieces are so well preserved after all these centuries.  The highlight is the frescos from some of the houses of that time. The exhibition provides you an idea of how people lived in that settlement on the 17th century BC. Amazing how they were so sophisticated and devoted to details.
  • After visiting the Akrotiri Archeological Site we came here to see an amazing display of artifacts. The organization can be improved. For example, even if you buy an "all in one ticket" from Akrotiri, you still have to stay in line at the ticket counter when you arrive here. It wasn't obvious to us that we had to do this. If they had this information displayed somewhere, it would have spared us at least an hour lost staying in queues. Also, you wanted to enter with a Dji Pocket camera that basically fits in your hand, and they told us that tripods are not allowed inside. I still give this museum 5 stars because we enjoyed seeing the pottery, the frescoes, and the golden ibex displayed.
