Lychnostatis Open Air Museum
Step into Cretan tradition at Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, where a reconstructed merchant and farmhouses stand alongside traditional wine and olive presses. These presses continue producing olive oil and wine today, and you'll find workshops that teach traditional techniques in handicrafts and produce goods you can buy here. Take in a performance of folk music and dancing at the 250-seat auditorium or taste some of the local wine. Before you leave, drink in the scents that drift off the herbs and cactuses in the traditional gardens. Located in the city center, the site is easily accessible from other major attractions. Make Lychnostatis Open Air Museum part of your personalized Hersonissos itinerary using our Hersonissos trip planner.

Here's a great window into history and culture in Crete. We received an audio guide to help us learn and we walked and looked at all the displays. All very interesting.

I visited this lovely open air museum Lychnostatis on Sunday the 31st of July. It has so much to see and lots of little details, prepare for at least 1,5-2 hours to spend your time there. The entrance fee was 7 euros and you got a map and translations of text written in Greek in many languages, including Finnish. There's also a possibility for audio guide should you want one. The bus stop is really close, just tell the staff in the bus that you're trying to get there, they'll know the right bus stop. To be honest, it would be better to visit this mostly garden-like place earlier, maybe in May or June, or then at the harvest time later in autumn. Then you would see more of those beautiful plants they have there. But, it's worth a visit anytime, in my opinion. It's not open on Saturdays and it's not open until late, so check the opening hours from the internet before you go. There are toilets and a cafeteria. You can get drinks and food there as well as buy some local products, if you wish. In the cafeteria they gave me freebies: the pears grown there. They weren't as sweet as the pears I've been eating but that was it for me because I'm not one for sweets. They were just perfect. 👍

Great experience and learning about the story of the family that built the museum. Great opportunity to see the different buildings up close. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Well worth a visit!

Money well spent. Very unique and informative museum- you can see the love and effort the curators put into it. Learning about the Cretan way of life. Great that it’s outdoors!

Unique place. Best spent 7 Euro! The place is magical. Entire place to see takes about 1 to 2 hours. It has a lot of amazing things to see. Pictures looks great. All stuff is friendly and ready to help. I would love to come back.

Visited this open air museum as 2 adults with 2 kids and 1 toddler. Entrance fee was only 20 euros for all 5 people combined. The effort, love and care that has been put into this place is astonishing, it is an absolutely beautiful place with many hidden gems to see everywhere. Ver informative educational and fun. You get pamphlets with your entrance fee explaining the different stations in multiple languages. The Lady working the reception is very nice and helpful. The Beach area is very quiet aswell so is the wonderfully designed little bar which serves homemade products from drinks to food. Also they serve Charma Beer which is by the far the best local brand and the prices are very reasonable. If you look for a nice 2 to 3 hour change from the extremely touristy area of Hersonnisos, this is the safe haven of culture and solitude you are looking for. I highly recommend this place.
