Create an itinerary including Skaros Rock
Skaros Rock once housed a castle that protected the 200 Catholic settlers who called the town home. The town of Skaros was the capital of the island of Santorini until multiple earthquakes caused families to leave. Today the site offers views from the lookout over the flat-top rock next to the sea. The Chapel of Agios Ioannis Apokefalistheis stands silent over the abandoned town. The white buildings high on the plateau are often pictured in postcards of Greece, and it's not uncommon to see a wedding party on the hills among the cafe terraces. • Really rewarding early morning hike, especially if you’re taking the full stretch from Fira along the caldera. The streets are clear and there’s plenty of shade along the way if you start early within an hour or sunrise. The peak / plateau of the rock doesn’t stay shaded for long beyond that 1 hour window. There are great views from the base of the rock. To get to the top, you’ll need to be comfortable with scaling a wall. It can be done relatively easily in 2 steps, about 6-7ft each. Good shoes and upper body strength are helpful because coming down can be a bit more challenging. To get there, you’ll need to make your way to the other side of the rock (12 o’clock position if you’re making your way down the stairs at 6 o’clock). There are stacked rocks marking the path. You’ll see something that looks like bleachers - that’s the beginning do the ascent. Good luck and have fun! Photos contain snapshots of the path there, and then counterclockwise around the rock
  • Worth visiting place if you want to see the beauty of natural in Santorini. The wind might be cold if it’s a cloudy day. In spring all the flowers blooms along the trail and you can find the great sea view from the cliff here including the famous volcano at the other side of the sea.
  • Would definitely recommend!!! A great hike (circa 40 minutes) from Fira (although maybe not at midday) and definitely worth it for the view. There is a sign prohibiting climbing the rock, but no one seems to mind. To get to the top you have to climb two harder passages, which is may be hard/scary for some people, but as a consolation the view doesn’t improve too much. I wouldn’t recommend it as a detour from the hike to Oia, unless you have a lot of energy and stamina:)
  • Great spot for sunset. Not too crowded even in august and enough space for people to spread out. Not too strenuous of a hike out. Be sure to go down to the church as well.
  • It was the most beautiful and emotional walk I've ever taken. We went to see the sunset right after the rain, and it was just the right time. The air was so clean, there were no crowds or people like in the center of Santorini, just pure peace and joy. We went behind the sign, but be cautious and wear comfortable shoes and clothing because some of the rocks are slippery. The energy and surrounding nature are incredible. A must-see when in Santorini.
