Create an itinerary including Meteora
Meteora, roughly translated as "suspended in the air," serves as one of the largest and historically most significant Eastern Orthodox monastery complexes in Greece, inscribed on the World Heritage List. The complex consists of a group of monasteries reachable only by narrow staircases painstakingly cut into steep sandstone cliffs. Orthodox monks settled in this region in the 11th century, originally building 24 monasteries, six of which remain intact. Each monastery possesses an important collection of precious sacred manuscripts and medieval frescoes, representing some of the finest examples of post-Byzantine painting. Wear shoes suitable for rugged terrain. Also take note to wear clothing that covers your knees and shoulders when entering the monasteries. • I went here on an organised coach tour from Corfu. You can can get some stunning pictures of the rock formations by the side of the road at various points before going to any of the monasteries. The limited stopping spaces can become very busy at times. The tour I was on visited two monasteries. At the first monastery we made our way up quite a few steps to pay the first entrance fee of 3 EUR. There are a few spots on the way up to take more pictures. Fortunately we had an English speaking guide included in the tour price which really helped to understand the history and the meaning of the paintings etc.Definitely worth it if you can have a guided tour. We spent about an hour here The second monastery was down a lot of steps then up to pay the entrance fee. Again the guide explained about the history to provide some context. There were also a few information boards to read in English. We stayed here for approximately 45 minutes. Toilet facilities were available at both places along with small gift shops. Modest clothing is required and ladies have to purchase a covering if they are not wearing a skirt. Great opportunity to see a wonderful UNESCO heritage site. You could spend all day here if you walked around and went to a few more monasteries.
  • One of the places that gives you the feeling that you have reached heaven, when you are actually in the world. Despite the distance from Athens or Thessaloniki the journey to Meteora is particularly worthwhile, you can get there by train independently or alternatively book a guided tour in advance. It is very important to arrive in modest attire, long pants and a skirt for women, in addition to T-shirts, it is recommended to arrive in the spring, summer and fall season, enjoy
  • The sight is amazing! The fresh air and the greenery, simply outstanding. Drive carefully there because the roads have scary curves. And don't go alone, you might find it boring. It good place for basic hiking too!
  • We loved visiting Meteora and the surrounding area. So many great views. The small Greek towns nearby have very friendly and welcoming people. It’s so calm and peaceful. Lots of options for hiking, biking, and sightseeing. We were happy to visit here, you get a feel of Greece from this place.
  • Unique and very impressive place in Greece. We did a day trip by car from Athens which was totally worth it. There are a lot of good spots to take amazing pictures. The monasteries are reachable by car on proper roads. I would recommend to visit the monastery in the middle because of the very interesting wall paintings and the highest one for an amazing view over the other monasteries. Consider to hire a guide because the guides in Greece are very good due to the high standards by law. Keep in mind that the monasteries close at 3:00pm.
