Built over a Neolithic town, The Palace of Knossos represented the ceremonial and political center of Minoan civilization on Crete. English archaeologist Arthur Evans made his name by working on the excavation and partial restoration of this ancient palace for over three decades, beginning in 1900. The palace complex contains a maze of living spaces, workshops, banquet halls, shrines, and storerooms, built around a central square sometime between 2000 and 1350 BCE. To gain a glimpse into the wealth and sophistication of the Minoan culture, hop on a bus in nearby Heraklion and join a guided tour of the palace's labyrinthine corridors, so vast they gave rise to the popular legend of King Minos and the Minotaur. Fantastic place for history buffs. It's a Minoan age castle from around 2,000 BC (or even before). It was just staggering to visualize the ancientness of the place. Be aware that much of the palace is a reconstruction and some of the pieces might not have been placed properly or in correct order. Archeology professionals are still trying to figure this out so that makes it even more interesting in my opinion. We took a guide for the tour rather than just wander around. It was not very expensive and we paid for a really amazing one at 100 Euros for 4 people. And trust me it was absolutely worth it. One caveat is that the line to get the tickets is long and takes a lot of time with most of the area not having shade. So it might make sense to get the tickets online prior to arriving at the palace. Guides can be booked after arrival. The total time spent would be around 2 to 2.5 hours. Must visit if in Crete.

This place is a must on a list when it comes to visiting Crete's sights. Well organized and a lot to see. Some things are really incredible and nowhere to be found. Large part was closed due to the restorations and work (summer 2022) There is nothing that I can write here that would be a match for this beauty. Simply put - go and visit, you will understand.

Good to see and to say you’ve visited! It gets very busy and hot during mid day hours! I would suggest getting here early to avoid ques and possibly getting nice photos without tourists photobombing. Quite rocky so wear trainers or comfortable/ supportive sandals. Very well kept and you can see they are trying to restore the surrounding area. Beautiful scenes and easy to imagine how the area would have looked all those years ago!

This place has an awesome history if you are interested. We took a tour guide right there on entrance. Entrance ticket price is 15$. Tour guide costs 100$. It was a group of 5 so came down to 20$ a person which was a good deal for history lesson we had. Also, if you take a tour guide you skip the line which was very long.Tour took about an hour hour and a half. Very informative and tells the legend of minotaur. I know I know we all can read internet but Tour is very informative. I definitely recommend. The place has huge parking lot. We got there around 2pm and had no issue to find it.

My husband and I visited here and we really enjoyed it. We were on a 3 day cruise through the Mediterranean and this was our excursion for half a day in Crete. Our tour guide was wonderful and gave us so much information. I had no idea the oldest road in Europe was at the Knossos Palace. Highly recommend. If you do plan on going here I would also plan the visit the museum. It holds a lot of the artifacts that were found at the Palace. We didn't have time to visit it but want to in the future.
