A fertile plateau that produces some of Crete's olive oil, Lassithi Plateau features white-sailed windmills extending above the valleys. Explore the area to find some early versions of these windmills scattered among old ruins of farms and towns. A memorial here commemorates the destruction of many of these villages during the Ottoman and Egyptian attacks of the 19th century. One of the best ways to tour the plateau's sites is by car; rental cars are available throughout the island.
