A relic of the Venetian occupation of Rethymon, The Venetian Fortezza stands in the center of town, offering 360-degree views of the coast below. In 1580, more than 107,00 Cretans were forced to help build the fort to protect the Venetians' last overseas colony. Unfortunately, several flaws, such as the lack of buttresses and a ditch, made the walls easy to scale without a ladder. In 1646, the Ottomans seized the fortress and settled the area inside. Many of the interior buildings have been destroyed, but the exterior fortifications remain intact. Lovely place. The views from the Fort are beautiful. Wandering around the alleys and streets below is enchanting. I could easily have spent hours exploring all the nooks.

Amazing historical site but absolutely no information within the site. Also a lot of garbage. So I assume the management really doesn’t care about keeping the site clean 😒

Nice historical place, family entrance fee 10EUR and it worth it. You get piece of history and nice view around! What I am just missing there are some signs, description of buildings... Very hot place, don't forget to take a water and visit WC before you go there. Don't worry about the line waiting for the tickets, it's moving fast.

Beautiful views of the sea and the city. Interesting historical monument. Family admission for 10€. In the summer count on minimal shade, it's really hot. You can buy refreshments at the beginning of the area, especially water.

This place is massive for a fort The views are stunning. There are site maps available free of charge in different languages Drinks are or where available at the time of our visit by the main entrance The entrance fee is 4€ each. Please be aware that the ground is very uneven and pebbles and stones are in all walkways Cheers DR

There’s not so much to see inside of the fortress, but it’s a nice activity. You can see and feel this mixture of different cultures that have influenced Crete throughout its history. The entrance fee is 4€.

A very huge area for a walk.At the entrance, it is better to take a map that is available in English and French languages. There is practically no shade on the territory, and it can be catastrophically hot in the season. So it's better to bring a hat, water and sunscreens with You. And what about views, they are amazing. You can see different Retimno from different corners💚 and also feel history in every place 🤍
