  • They're not open always, it took me a few times of going up there to find when they were actually open.

  • Take the time and head up to the Iguana research and breeding station on Utila. They have wonderful people on staff and are trying to keep a threatened species of Iguana from going extinct.

  • I highly recommend stopping here while on your stay in Utila. It is very educational and gives you a better insight to what is happening on the island. We arrived just as they were feeding the Iguanas. The staff greeted us and welcomed us to the place. They allowed us to assist in feeding the iguanas all while giving us a view of what they do there and on the island. They are a good organization working on many things other than the iguanas. I recommend stopping in for a visit and learn some interesting facts. They do welcome donations to help support their efforts.
  • It's neither a zoo nor an iguana farm, the Iguana Station is an honest grassroots project dedicated to the research and conservation of Utila's wildlife and ecosystems, as well as promoting local youth. The station was built 25 years ago as a joint project of German and Honduran scientists. Since 2008 the project is now part of the Bay Islands Foundation, a non-profit and non-governmental organization from Honduras.
  • A VERY special place - I volunteered here for 4 months many years ago. Learnt so much. So many great people on this island working to protect it, and I always fondly remember Elga’s omelettes :) Terry the dog and Beauty the dog will be dead now but they were super special too, and Ray Charles the rat who was a little legend! Anyone who has the chance to volunteer - go for it! You will be doing genuine, vital work.
  • Interesting quick visit. We stopped by when they were closed and were still able to see all the iguana cages and learn about the restoration programs. Worth the walk.
  • I don't know. Interesting stop on the way to the chocolate factory. Not much to see really.
