Create an itinerary including Matthias Church
At Matthias Church--within World Heritage Site Buda Castle--admire an eclectic fusion of architectural styles. Originally built in the 14th century (although an 11th century church occupied the site previously), the church has undergone major expansion and renovation, most notably by the hand of Frigyes Schulek from 1873-96. On the outside, a rococo spire laden with snarling gargoyles and intricate detailing rises out of the main body of the church--a 15th century construction in the French style. Colorful chevrons and diamonds adorn the roof. Step inside and you'll find an interior even more elaborate than the exterior, where 19th century geometric patterns and tilework complement the restored medieval frescoes, bright stained-glass windows, and fluted pillars. Head upstairs for views of the Danube, or downstairs to see the treasury, which includes a replica of the Crown of St. Stephen. Put Matthias Church and other Budapest attractions into our Budapest road trip planning site, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • A gorgeous church which is completely painted inside. It’s 2500 HUF to enter and as it was Sunday it was only open from 1300. Make sure to climb up to the gallery as there are religious artefacts...

  • An amazing place, and an even better view from the top of the tower! Entrance tickets are purchased at the box office across from the church, there are several tours a day. There are 197 steps to the top and you go with a guide who speaks in English and the local language. Also, there are many seating areas around the church where you can enjoy the beautiful view. Don't miss out if you're in Budapest!
  • The most beautiful church in Hungary, they say. And one of the most beautiful I've ever visited, and trust me I've seen a few and the best around Europe! Easily beats some very heavy names out there! Very warmly decorated, really good vibes, the balconies and the upper level tour a super plus! Stunning to say the least.
  • Amazing church built in Gothic fashion. It is more beautiful from the inside, and has very unique architecture and design. The small fee you pay to visit the inside is worth the experience. There are several info placards inside that guide and inform you about the history of the church. Museum is accessible up the stairs and included in the ticket. Visit inside the church is a must.
  • Magnificent church, together with the castle making the whole complex so beautiful. The church itself is very impressive. So if you go to the Buda castle and hill area, ensure to walk all the way to the end for this spectacular church and surrounding area. You can have great view of Budapest parliament from here too. Highly recommended!
