Feast your eyes on the stark contrasts of Viti Crater, a steep volcanic basin 300 m (985 ft) in diameter and featuring a lake at the bottom. The crater was formed centuries ago during a massive volcanic eruption. Hike up to the top for views of the lake and its steaming thermal vents, as well as the surrounding mountains. Viti means “hell” in Icelandic and you can imagine how it got this name when it erupted. Now it’s a picturesque crater filled with water. Worth a stop but not the most impressive volcanic feature...

Whether you go to stand at the rim or walk around the rim it is worth it to see the 400 foot deep blue lake. Later in the day it was easy to park.

I'll confess... this was on the list of things to do. It was snowing. A lot. Again. We pulled up, thinking we were in the parking lot, bundled up, and headed out for the short walk to the crater..... more

Very beautiful site. The crater has a turquoise lake. During winter the lake freezes but in summer time the contrast between the colours of the crater and the lake is just amazing. You can walk halfway at the top or just see it from few steps from the parking lot.

My favourite area on the golden circle, parking is very close!

Absolutely loved it!! One of the highlights in my north of Iceland roadtrip - there are actually 2 craters here, both blue in colour. Honestly this place is so cool.

Easy access by the road, even in March. Treck easy too, great view to see what's going on down the volcan ! Highly recommend it !
-
Nice crater, you can walk around it and even hike on top of it. It's pretty easy to reach.
