Svartifoss Waterfall
Svartifoss is a waterfall in Skaftafell in Vatnajökull National Park in Iceland, and is one of the most popular sights in the park. It is surrounded by dark lava columns, which gave rise to its name. Other well-known columnar jointing formations are seen at the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland, Devil's Tower in Wyoming, United States and on the island of Staffa in Scotland. There are also similar formations throughout Iceland, including a small cave on the beach of Reynisdrangar. With our custom trip planner, Vatnajokull National Park attractions like Svartifoss Waterfall can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.
The base of this waterfall is noteworthy for its sharp rocks. New hexagonal column sections break off faster than the falling water wears down the edges.
These basalt columns have provided inspiration for Icelandic architects, most visibly in the Hallgrímskirkja church in Reykjavík, and also the National Theatre.

Beautiful scenery along the trail. Trail is well maintained. Not really a difficult hike, around 2km one way, the waterfall is beautiful 👍🏻
-
Super nice hike; bit inclination but not super hard; recommending to start track to waterfall first then walk to glacier and go down from there to parking - I believe it’s easier that way:) more or less 8 km with a sun just amazing!

This is a really beautiful waterfall. I am obsessed with the basalt columns and love seeing them everywhere. We hiked up to the waterfall, which took around 40-45 mins at a steady pace, and then we went a sort of circular route back which was nice to see different things. You do need to pay to get into the national park.

One of our favorite waterfalls in Iceland. Around 40 minutes hike to get there, but with nice views and not a difficult hike. Only the last bit, as it was covered with ice and snow was a bit slippery. Definitely worth doing!!

The waterfall is spectacular, for its basalt column backdrop… the walk (not a hike) to the waterfall is a gradual incline, with a pathway covered with plastic material to prevent further erosion of the ground. I enjoy the view of the surrounding glaciers from the return path that’s from the other side of the waterfall. It seems easier to come down as there were steps instead of smooth/slippery surface. There is a large and clean bathrooms at the visitor center…and many campers seem to appreciate.
