Perhaps one of Europe's most untraditional beaches, Black Sand Beach is covered completely in black stones and sand. This beach it is one of the wettest places in Iceland; and its beauty ranks with exotic beaches around the world. Islands magazine has listed it as one of the top ten beautiful beaches. Large columns of black basalt line the coast, sculpted over the years. Those who are brave can be seen climbing up for a photo opportunity. You won't want to swim here, though; the absence of landmass from here to Antarctica means these waters are strong and cold. The winds from the coast are quite powerful as well, so be sure to wear extra layers. Use our Vik trip planner to add Black Sand Beach and other attractions to your Vik vacation plans.

World famous beach and no wonder. One of my personal favourites in our two day's private tours in Iceland. In summer time I could easily spend there the whole day. Great waves, truly black sand...

The waves are so powerful and the rock formations so beautiful! We enjoyed being here so much that we visited it on our way to Skaftafell and back. Don't miss it!

Incredible! It's unreal! The dark sand contrasts so well with the water and the white caused by the smashing waves, it's both beautiful and brutal! The geological formations are also wonderful, it's amazing what nature can do! It's so, so pretty, you can't miss it. No drones allowed.

This beach was among my highlights of Iceland! Beautiful basalt columns - we walked along to the end of the beach and there were lots of different types of the basalt columns as they had formed which were really cool to see. The black sand is just amazing too and so different to every other beach I’ve been to!

What a place! Such a beautiful and unique beach. I would definitely recommend seeing. Free to see. We went early hours no one was there so could enjoy it and get photos in peace. Them waves are not to be messed with. There are warning signs everywhere about sneak waves it's icelands deadliest beach.Unfortunately a man died 3 days before our arrival and got dragged out. I really wish people would pay attention to the signs they are there for a reason! There's been rumours of shutting it off because people don't listen. It's unfortunate as it's an amazing site to see and I'm glad we saw it. I would recommend but please watch them waves!

Dramatic black volcanic sand beach , also known to be dangerous , with stunning basalt columns. Be careful while climbing those columns. It’s just 2-3 mins from the parking . There’s a restaurant too

So beautiful to see such a rare occurrence with the black sands of this beach. Do be careful as the tide can come quite close, it’s recommended not to go too close to the water. It’s very peaceful and you can walk along the coast if you have the time. Definitely a must see if you travel to Iceland.
