Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple is a Hindu temple located in Nandi village, at the base of Nandi Hills in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka state, India. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.HistoryThe original temple in the complex, identified as one of the oldest temples of Karnataka, dates back to the early 9th century. The earliest inscriptions referring to the construction of the temple for Shiva, according to the Archaeological Survey of India, are from Nolamba dynasty ruler Nolambadiraja and the Rashtrakuta emperor Govinda III dated c.806, and copper plates of the Bana rulers Jayateja and Dattiya of about c.810. The temple was later under the patronage of successive notable South Indian dynasties: the Ganga Dynasty, the Chola dynasty, the Hoysala Empire and the Vijayanagara Empire. In the post medieval era, the local chiefs of Chikaballapura and the rulers of the Mysore Kingdom (Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan) controlled the region before it eventually came under British rule after the death of Tipu Sultan in c.1799. The architectural style is Dravidian. The temple is located at a distance of 60 km from Bangalore. The temple is protected as a monument of national importance by the Archaeological Survey of India.

  • Beautiful ancient temple. The carvings are intricate and I felt awe admiring the craftsmanship. It feels very peaceful and calm. Well maintained. Definitely a place to visit if you like to see a beautiful ancient temple not too far away from Bangalore. There are couple of places nearby too to visit so it's a good half day trip.
  • Temple is very huge, peaceful, pleasant and full of grand ancient architecture. 3 entrances are there, half day trip from Bangalore. Small food stalls are available outside but go with family or friends take your lunch and eat it outside under huge trees like picnic. The water pond outside and well inside need strict maintenance. Just positive vibes. Park vehicle outside the main gate only. Worthy visit in Karnataka. Many monkeys are roaming inside temple premises, be careful. I wish there is some guidance to understand about the sculptures on walls and pillars.
  • An ancient Hindu temple with excellent architecture. We get a divine feeling while entering into this place. Very calm place to relax. The temple is very close to Nandi Hills. There are many gates to enter into its compound. The temple is not maintained properly by the authorities. We need to park our vehicles on the main road.
  • The Best temple I've ever visited and remembered. Do talk to the priests to learn more about the history of this ~1300 year old beautiful temple they are very nice and were able to speak in english which made our visit to the temple much more exciting. Every wall has a detailed sculptured art on it. I wasn't able to believe that it was 1300 years old.
  • According to the priest this temple is about 1300 years old. It was built by different rulers. Beautiful structure and very intricate stone carvings. A good day trip from Bangalore. Bring your lunch with you. After temple visit, you can enjoy lunch with your family under tree shade. Worth a visit I must say.
