Marvel at the astonishing Buddhist cave shrines built into the rocky hillside at Karla Caves. Head inside the shrines, constructed between the 2nd century BCE and 5th century CE, to discover inscriptions, art, and stupas (dome-shaped structure used as shrines). Witness incredible examples of ancient Buddhist architecture and culture displayed within the caves. The complex contains a Buddhist monastery, which once had two 15 m (49 ft) long pillars, of which only one now remains. Inside the main cave, discover a huge 45 m (148 ft) long and 14 m (46 ft) high "chaitya" hall, carved from stone and one of the largest of its kind in India. Regular maintenance work often causes parts of the protected monument to close to the public. • The main cave was interesting, didn't realise that there was only two caves to see. Felt that the 300r entrance fee was a bit steep. Better to visit Ajanta and Ellora, far better.

  • Caves hold rich history. Ticket is very cheap. 25rs for Indians and foreigners it is 300rs. If carrying camera then it is 25rs. Statues are not that well maintained or cleaned or preserved. Better care can be taken after looking at the crowd that it attracts.
  • The Karla Caves are a truly remarkable historical and cultural destination that offer visitors an unforgettable experience. The intricate carvings made by Buddhists depict various events of their culture, including the depiction of idols from that era, which is truly breathtaking and gives a sense of ancient history. These caves, some of which are over 2200 years old, are also home to the temple of the goddess Ekvira, making them a sacred and historically significant destination. The trek to the caves starting from the ground is enjoyable and offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, but for those who prefer a more leisurely experience, car parking is available and cars can also drive up to the caves. Overall, the Karla Caves are a must-visit destination for history buffs, culture enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The combination of history and natural beauty makes it a unique and special place.
  • One the ancient structure remained in Western ghats of India which displays Buddhist ideology and their love for architecture in caves. This might be one of the scenic tourist attraction couple of decades ago. The climb by stairs was pleasant and easy affair. There is a beautiful waterfall just before the caves. Gladly it's out of reach of people. But it's now marred by shops set on both sides of stairs and their encroachment extending till middle of steps. There is entrance fee for caves of Rs. 50 per person along with parking fee and entrance fee looted by villagers. As the case with all other historically important sites, this one also is poorly maintained. No informative signages, no direction boards anywhere. Our fellow countrymen have successfully carried out their responsibility of dirtying the place with all kinds of litter. Washrooms in parking are filthy and not usable.
  • The main cave here is really well preserved compared to other similar cave complexes. Even some of the wooden structures have survived. The carvings are really intricate. The other 3-4 caves in the complex are in ruins and have been cordoned off. It would have been better if there were information boards explaining various inscriptions (probably in Brahmi script) on pillars and walls. Adjacent to the caves there is also a very popular temple and hence it is always a bit crowded. Better to visit during early morning hours. Entry fee of Rs. 25 to enter the caves.
  • It is a very nice architectural ancient history place. But the place is not at all maintained. People has littered everywhere. There is a very famous ekvira temple also which is beside this cave. And the route which you travel to reach this cave also very steep and nice!!
