Rothe House and Garden
Visit an important symbol of Killkenny's heritage at Rothe House and Garden, the only 17th-century merchant's house still standing in Ireland. Built between 1594 and 1610, the residence will give you a sense of Renaissance times as you wander through its three houses. The museum within hosts 2,500 original artifacts all related to Killkenny's history. Many of these are over 400 years old, and some date back to prehistoric times. Tours are self-guided, so take as much time to view the relics as you like. Afterward, stroll through the garden out back, which was recently constructed and emulates a typical 17th-century garden. If you have Killkenny roots, the Rothe House can help you trace your Irish genealogy. Beautiful place to visit while in the Medieval City of Kilkenny. A historic monument with great gardens. "Rothe House is a unique Tudor merchant’s townhouse, built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden to the rear." "It is the only remaining example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland, and considered to be nationally significant because of the range of original post-medieval features that survive."

The house was interesting for a quick walk through. For me the real shining star was the gardens. I'm amazed at how they've analyzed soil to determine plants that were there, used art and records from when Rothe lost the property to convert a trashy cement parking lot back into a beautiful garden reflecting what it once was. There were also snowdrops and crocus blooming!

Rothe House and its garden is actually quite nice. However, giving only 2 points as a) the guided tour was not available (okay, due to staff shortage), the entry fee was still €7.50 per person which is imo really a rip off for what can be seen here. And b) it seems like we could have visited the garden for free (another side entrance) for a donation. And the garden was the nicest part of the tour.

Loved the house but the grounds stole the show. To find out that they had deteriorated and then became a car park was astounding when today it has returned to a most beautiful garden complete with orchard and manicured plantings.

I just love learning how people lived in a certain period In history. This tour is great and our guide was thorough in explaining the expansion of the house over the years and incorporating other historical events in the city and how they affected the family. The gardens were also beautiful
