Westport House in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, is a well known Irish tourist attraction, owned by the Hughes family, who own a number of businesses in the west of Ireland. Until January 2017 it was the ancestral seat of the Browne family, whose head was the Marquesses of Sligo. The title and the house were separated in 2014, following the death of the 11th Marquess of Sligo, who left the estate to his five daughters. His titles passed to his first cousin, Sebastian Ulick Browne, a residential real estate agent in Australia. It was built by the Browne family in the 18th Century, near the site of an O'Malley castle. The architects were Richard Cassels, who built (1730) the east section of the house facing the town, and later James Wyatt, who built the other three façades to form a quadrangle. Later the quadrangle was filled in with a grand staircase. North and south wings were added to the designs of Benjamin Wyatt. The south wing, which contained a library, was burned soon after it was built due to a defect in the heating system. It was subsequently rebuilt.
A model farm was built in the demesne in the early part of the 19th century with accommodation for housing animals and animal feed.
The remains of an old boathouse open to the sea.

  • It was lovely to see the house and hear the history. We wish the new owners the best of look with renovations.

  • Love Westport House it's such a tranquil relaxing place to walk around the gardens. You can also go in and view the interior of the house be mindful it is under recent renovations lately and it's strictly on a booking visit at the moment I think. But even a visit to this beautiful place is well worth the visit. Plenty of child family fun activities during peak summer months and it also has a camping spot and bar/restaurant for visitors/campers and washing facilities for overnight camping too!
  • We had a wonderful, funny and informative tour through the Westport House. Our guide Moirin was a great pleasure to meet. She made the tour to be a great experience. Thank you so much. (And keep up with your German lessons :-)
  • Lovely place. Just feels like it should be much more... Lots of grounds, but not really much that can actually be walked around. Frisbee, foot golf and pedal swans were fun. We were considering the pirate adventure park for our 11yr old daughter, which seems to be just 4 or 5 activities and we were told was aimed at 7-13yrs. However for her to go in an adult ticket would also be needed even if not going on rides, €20 for her plus €25 for an adult, so decided against. Campsite looks lovely though. Overall, worth an hour or two of your family's time.
  • Lovely place for a Family day out . Pirates adventure park is fun, it's small though.. I think if they introduce more rides and other activities it will attract more people..70 euro for family day pass of 4, bit expensive I think as they should allow visiting the House with that price as well,as you need pay separate for that... Lovely scenery though
  • Gorgeous House & grounds. I went on the Restoration Tour of the house. The tour was great wonderful to see for yourself work that is going into the house to its former glory
