Museo della Carta is a museum set in a 13th-century paper mill, where you can learn about the history of paper and how it was once made. The oldest structure of its kind in Europe, this mill still features working original paper presses, and you can even create your own paper. Learn about processes like cotton-based and wood-pulp paper production during a tour of the site. Before you leave, you can purchase stationery in all kinds of designs. Everyday I try to learn something new, but today's tour of the museum is in the top 10 of all time for me. Found this place wondering the streets of Almafi Coast and will forever be grateful for this trip! I thought I knew the origin of paper..... I did not BUT I do now! Awesome guide who answered every question with a smile.... and there were many! 😃 Hands down the best value of anything we did this week I will remember today the rest if my life. History is so amazing 👏🏾
I can't say that I was excited to visit a paper museum but I was pleasantly surprised and found it quite engaging. The historic papermill was carved into the rocks which created a cool grotto experience. The evolution of paper making over the centuries was described and exhibited using the actual restored tools and machinery. They harvested creek energy and used water wheels to power the machinery, which was innovative for the time and environmentally sustainable even by today's standards. A must see when visiting Amalfi.
Very interesting museum showing how they made paper in medieval and later times. I think taking the guided tour is worth it (4.5€ entrance without, 7€ entrance with), especially with the tour guide we had - Tommaso. They explain how the whole process went, give an overview on the machines, as well as some fun facts. They even let you make some paper and there’s also a small gift at the end.
Worth a visit. If you are around in Amalfi, go there. It is not a museum but an experience: you can try and make your sheets of paper. You also understand how high-quality paper industry started in middle ages.
Interesting tour and experience. You get a try at making paper and see how some of the old machinery worked. A bit overpriced for what you get I think but still worthwhile
