  • At the back of the church this is a quiet cemetery focused on the fallen from wars. So if you are visiting the church wander around the back.

  • Historic Church from 4th C
  • Very interesting
  • The cemetery of the Heroes of Aquileia is located close to the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta. It is a very important historical site because it is different from the shrines and ossuaries. In this place the body of the Unknown Soldier left in 1921 towards the Altare della Patria. Each tomb is characterized by the presence of an iron cross, adorned with an intertwining of laurel and oak. In the cemetery there are also several monumental works: -A sarcophagus that contains the 10 unknown soldiers and at its feet the tomb of Maria Bergamas, the mother who chose the coffin of the unnamed soldier then brought to the Altare della Patria - the marble sculpture depicting Jesus Christ on the cross comforting two dying infantrymen at his feet -The Angel of Charity, where a dying soldier is supported by a female figure with wings
  • It is a very important historical site because, unlike the other cemeteries, shrines and ossuaries, it is the only one to have kept its original form since burials began in 1915. Furthermore, it was from this very place that the 1921 the body of the Unknown Soldier towards the Altare della Patria.
  • This is where the unknown soldier left in 1921 and here is the funeral monument to the woman and mother who chose the soldier to transfer to Rome. A touching place full of history
