Chiesa di San Giovanni Crisostomo, Bari

I was struck by this little church that I passed by by chance, only to find out later that it is Catholic of the Byzantine rite, I confess that it is a novelty for me.

13th century church used by Catholics of the Byzantine rite. It is located at the beginning of the old city, near the Castle, near the parking lot. The Church is very beautiful, small, but beautiful with a single nave. On the left is the tombstone of Cecilia Carducci, a Bari noble who had patronage over the church and died in 1700, followed by a marble plutus. From the beautiful and classic colors of the Orthodox, the large wooden iconostasis with the cross above. If you succeed behind the altar, then behind the iconostasis), a beautiful canvas of the "Virgin of Platytera". The Church is always open, at least....When I was there the cleaning was in progress and my presence had a little "enraptured" the priest therefore....

In 1957, at the request of many Eastern Christian families, the Catholic Parish of the Byzantine Rite of San Giovanni Crisostomo was erected. Three parish priests followed one another: papas Giuseppe Ferrari, papas Samenco and papas Antonio Magnocavallo, still parish priest today. The Church of San Giovanni Crisostomo, in addition to being the parish of the numerous Byzantine Catholics who frequent it, is an outpost and living reference of Eastern Christian spirituality in Bari, making that ideal bridge that this city throws across the sea even shorter. Here, as in the Trieste Village, what is theorized elsewhere is practiced. In this church the fraternal and Christian welcome of the Orthodox brothers with whom it shares the uninterrupted liturgical tradition is a common experience. The parish depends on the Eparchy of Lungro (CS).

It looks beautiful from the outside, and it also gave me the feeling that the neighborhood where it is located is inhabited by faithful Catholics of the Greco-Latin rite. They pray the liturgy during the week at 8 in the morning and on holidays at 9:30. The area where it is located is beautiful and it is very nice to take a walk at sunset.
