The Cave "Grotta Gigante"
The largest naturally occurring cavern in Europe, The Cave "Grotta Gigante" was discovered in 1840 during a search for underground water sources for the town’s aqueduct. Take a tour, available in Italian or English, and head down the 500 steps, past ancient stalactites and stalagmites, stopping to take in the views. After the tour, visit the nearby museum of speleology to learn more about the formation of the caves and see some interesting geological and paleontological finds, as well as a poster collection depicting the cave. The caves were just so cool! Much larger than expected. The tour lasted an hour and the guide was very knowledgeable. I learned a lot about stalagmite/stalactite formation which really rocks...

Astonishing cave! Our 3 year old manage to happily go down 500 steps and 500 up with little help. He did hurry the group to keep going few times because he didn't understand the guide. Our guide was helpful and told us interested informations about mostly anything in the cave. At the exit is possible to buy various minerals and fossils. Great souvenir shop !

Amazing cavern in Trieste. Well worth taking the time to visit. Accessible by bus from downtown Trieste. Take your time to enjoy one of nature's wonders. Also take a light jacket as it is damp and bit chilly. Quite a bit of walking so be prepared.

Definitely the largest open area I've seen in a cave. It's overwhelming to enter this huge open space that is completely under ground (as with any cave, of course) and especially to descend to its bottom and then up again. A wonderful experience and a great guide! We had a nice technical discussion and we got interesting details about the earth, not just this cave. Great job!

Very impressive cave and definitely worth the visit and the money. We had a great multilingual guide (thanks to Justin), who gave very detailed information and answered all questions. 500 stairs are a lot, but definitely doable 😊

The Grotta was so impressive and the guide was very friendly. 500 steps down and 500 steps up. Enjoyable and unforgettable visit. Advise: please send an email to grotta to book your tickets. If you go to the counter, it is possible the group is full.
