Create an itinerary including Forte di Fenestrelle
Renowned as the biggest alpine fortification in Europe, Forte di Fenestrelle dominates the hills above Fenestrelle. Often nicknamed "The Great Wall of the Alps," this giant fortress occupies 130 hectares (320 acres) of land. Built by the House of Savoy in the late 17th century, this fortress sat at a strategic point by the French border at a time when Europe was aflame with wars of nation-building. The complex includes three major forts, ramparts, batteries, barracks, powder magazines, warehouses, kitchens, a governor's mansion, a parade ground, and a church. Due to pillaging over time, the fortress is now in a state of preservation and reconstruction: your entry fees will help with this process. • Had a great time visiting (3 hours tour) led by Gian who shared a lot of history and little stories with us. Nice exercise too climbing half the way up the fort. Highly recommended.

  • Woooooow the highest peak is the best view to see overlooking and amazing 👏 I love it also its my first time to see 3rd level underground museum
  • Historical fort. Uphill walks up the stairs if one decides to make the full tour.
  • Amazing! Fantastic! Take either the shortest or the full path up to the top and you'll enjoy a great piece of history. Even guides are cool and very handsome. The forte itself is easy to reach and there's just a park in front of it. Book the tour in advance, especially during summer. Wear comfortable shoes and a camera, then relax and enjoy!
  • Impressive! A local compared this fort to the chinese wall ... from the photos and after being inside the staircases it's not far fetched ... It's pretty awesome what was built there. There are guided tours ... which we missed.
  • visted 5 March with small resiudal patches of snow; visit really worth it; magnificnent weather. As we could not understand Italian well enough for the group visit, we got special treat from Anna, one the assocation volunteers, who made a presentation in French to us + then let us walk the covered corridors; Thanks so much ANNA ! if you visit on your own, the visit is quite limited to the front part. Going to the second fort is only allowed with guide ( 3 h round trip).
