Castel Savoia, Gressoney Saint Jean

The castle was built by will of Queen Margherita of Savoy in August 1899 and the works lasted until 1904. It stands in a place with an incredible view of the valley and the Lyskamm glacier. The residence hosted the Queen during her summer stays until 1925, a year before her death. After that the castle was not used for several years. It was sold in 1936 to the Milanese businessman Moretti and then sold again to the Valle d'Aosta Autonomous Region in 1981. I suggest to book your tickets online since visits are only with a guide and run every hour.

Such a magical place. Used to be the summer residency of Queen Margherita di Savoia. Really impressive architecture and interiors. Totally worth doing the guided tour!

Amazing Castle and lovely colorful garden in beneath. I recommand walking from thecastle to lake gover, about 25 mins

I like this place. Outside of the castel, there is a small botanical garden where plants from all over the world have been planted.

About 2 weeks ago, we went to the mountain resort 1385 meters above the sea called Gressoney-Saint-Jean (Aosta Valley), where Castel Savoia is located. There is the Lyskamm Glacier and the Monte Rosa Mountains as a spectacular backdrop.Queen Margherita loved the mountains with all her heart. The guide told me that Gressoney-Saint-Jean was not very popular at that time, but the queen was invited by a German baron to stay at his private villa in 1889. Later on, she wanted to build a private residence in the valley, which was built at an altitude of 1,440 meters above sea level. It was designed by architect Emilio Stramucci and took 5 years to build (completed in 1904).There is a botanical garden in front of the castle. It is a rock garden where they plant mountain flowers. While driving up there, you will find lovely mountain villages. But what I like most is Gressoney-Saint-Jean. We got lucky to see a flower market by chance. What a wonderful atmosphere.
