Located in the historic heart of the city, Piazza Anfiteatro was constructed over an ancient Roman amphitheater. The onetime amphitheater, built as a vast entertainment complex just outside the Roman town, became a centrally located plaza during the medieval period. Today, the oval-shaped square is lined with houses, cafes, and restaurants. The square’s central sections were used for vegetable patches until the 19th century, when a local architect named Lorenzo Nottolini redesigned the space, demolishing some of the old structures and creating a new public area over the ancient foundations. Parts of the original amphitheater still rest below the paved surface, with a few ancient remains visible in the buildings enclosing the square. With our custom trip planner, Lucca attractions like Piazza Anfiteatro can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Lovely piazza with its unique shape and homes overlooking it. There was a dance and music show when we went — the entire town seemed like a party zone for young people on Saturday night.

Somewhat touristy of course but nevertheless this unique transformation of a Roman amphitheatre has its own charm. Nice bars and restaurants serving typical tourist fayre and a few benches where you can sit and enjoy the lively atmosphere. Don't omit to find the few remaining original Roman stones on the outside.

Very nice place with a lot of restaurants, ice cream store, souvenirs. Good food, prices for everyone, fast service...typical italian. The houses are all linked forming am amphitheater lime construction. We ate at "La Grotta"....it was very good. Totally recommended when in Lucca.

A unique oval piazza created as people repurposed the ancient Roman amphitheater into buildings. Walking the exterior exposes elements of the original Roman architecture where the interior is filled with cafe’s and shops catering to tourists. A bit crowded with tourists - but worth the visit.
-
A great market feel with a lot to choose from. Be careful on which restaurant you pick. Do some research first as not all are the same service or quality of food.

This is a round Piazza with shops and restaurants, located within a beautiful town called Luca, which is located within a fortress that is well maintained despite the passage of time, it is well worth visiting this colorful place.
