When in Tuscany, don't miss the chance to admire the historical sights of Lucca, of which San Michele in Foro is a major highlight. A church has stood on the ancient Roman forum in Lucca since at least the 8th century, but the building of the current structure started about 200 years later and lasted for several centuries. The result is an intriguing combination of Gothic and Romanesque styles, especially visible on the facade adorned with numerous arcades and sculptures. The interior of the basilica is more subtle and offers a perfect setting for enjoying ecclesiastic art. Bear in mind that the basilica is still active, so be respectful of worshippers. Excellent place! Recommended for families with young children. We love it and not so far away from Florence. You can combine your trip with places around.

Beautiful old church. One worth visiting and taking photos of.
-
Lucca, is the "City of 100 Churches" but this Church is different from others. It's one of the best tourist attractions in Lucca. The plaza is full of cafes and locals with great atmosphere. San Michele is a very nice place to visit

This was the older Cathedral of the city. Must see are the underground roman remnants. The church is built on top of a Roman Forum (looked more like Therme to me!!!).
-
This place doesn't even look real. When I encountered this cathedral I found a place to sit and ended up staring at it for a good 30 minutes. It looks like an illustration you might see in a fantasy novel. And the size of this place, compared to the surrounding community, just stunning.

Its Italy....Lucca is a great retreat from the big cities....the plaza is full of cafes and locals...in the center of the town...still used for catholic mass, weddings and events
