MOOM Matera Olive Oil Museum, Matera

When we arrived we weren't sure they were ready for us. It needs booking in advance. The father of the family gave us superb audiovisual guides in English.. He then accompanies you around the museum and at first we thought this was odd but then realised that at each stop he added either an explanation or made it interactive by showing us how water flowed through and allowing us to turn the millstones as though we were mules. He was absolutely charming and kind. It really gave an appreciation for the art of making the olive oil and this historical building dating back nearly 300 years. Not to be missed. Genuinely an experience you won't forget. The olive oil was tasty at the end so we bought some as a souvenir.

Highly highly highly recommend. Martina lead us so beautifully around the museum. She is so knowledgeable and had so many interesting things to share with us. We booked by emailing on the day but I imagine in high season tours would book out days in advance.

We are so glad we decided to visit here on our trip to Matera! We emailed the day before we visited and were able to get a time slot the next day with just the 2 of us on a tour. We were given great audio guides in English but the owner spoke Italian and French too and provided us with additional explanations at each point. It was so interesting and such a niche thing to learn about - who really knows how olive oil used to be made?? At the end you got to taste some olive oil and it was delicious. Wish we could’ve brought some home on our carry-ons!

We had a great experience here learning about how olive oil was made in Matera. The tour is provided via an audio guide for non English speakers. The host provides additional demos. You then get to try one olive oil at the end. The cost was €7. You need to book in advance by calling / emailing.

Are you thinking about skipping this? DONT!!! This whole experience was absolutely incredible. It's like a time Travelling machine and the olive oil is delicious!
