A watchful guardian over the city of Modena, Ghirlandina serves as the city's token landmark and traditional symbol. The elegant bell tower and World Heritage Site stands 82 m (269 ft) tall and can be seen from all angles of the city. The rectangular first five floors were built in 1179 and follow the Roman architectural canons, while the characteristically Gothic octagonal cusp and pyramid were later added. Two garland-like marble balustrades crown the tower and give it its name. Make the 200-step climb to the top, and consider using one of the audio guides, which are available in many languages. Ghirlandina is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.

  • Worth a climb to the top during your visit to Modena. It is not as long/high as you'd think. Actually the stairs were quite cool inside on a roasting hot day.

  • This wonderful marble tower stands next to the cathedral in Modena's main square. For the princely sum of €3 you can enter and climb almost to the top where a friendly guide will explain the history....  more

  • The bell tower is absolutely beautiful. While it is a nice climb to get to the top the view is beautiful. The tower itself it stunning and covered in marble.
