Sacro Monte di Orta, Orta San Giulio

I recommend visiting this holy place. There is a very pleasant climb up from the town, conferring delightful views across Lake Orta to the island (Isola Orta). The 21 chapels and the figures they contain depict the story of St. Francis and the mountain top itself is a tranquil and calming destination.

This compleanno is incredibly beautiful, quite similar to the Sacro Monte di Varallo but maybe a bit bigger. They’re both quite close to each other so you could see both on the same day

We stumbled into this amazing place by accident. The chapels are stunning in their details from St. Francis’s life, and in many of the chapels the sculptures are life sized and feel almost contemporary in their life-like accuracy. Fascinating from a historical and spiritual perspective.

Don't miss it. Very nice walk, great views, and a lot of things to see. It is very pleasant in a sunny day, but even when cloudy it is very nice, different and interesting. Take the little path at the end that leads to the center to enjoy some good wine and food.

We really enjoyed our time here. Wandering in the pleasant woodland from chapel to chapel. There are 20 chapels and it's good to visit in order to follow the story of St Francis. The chapels are a bit gloomy to the eye, but my camera picked out better details.
