Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

The basilica of our Lady in Trastevere is a real piece of art. You can spend hours in observing and appreciating the ceiling (check the photos). I spent an hour in this basilica and will go back again during my next visit to the eternal city of Rome. The surroundings are full of charm. This is one of the most charming areas in Rome. A lot of great restaurants!

You would not expect it when you stand in front of the Basilica, but this is a surprisingly large and very beautiful Basilica. The Basilica is located in the Trastevere district and has a beautiful ceiling, magnificent mosaic and stained glass. Admission is free (August 2022). If you are in Trastevere, do not hesitate to visit this beautiful Basilica.

One of the oldest churches in Rome. The basic floor plan and wall structure of the church date from the 340s, though much of the current building is from the 1140s during the Romanesque period. The interior has extensive mosaics from the 12-13th century. The Baroque coffered ceiling was added in 1617.

This beautiful church is located in the lovely Trastevere neighborhood in Rome. When strolling Trastevere stop by and take in the beauty of the church. The church like many others in Italy is impressive in every way from the sculptures to the frescos. One of the most impressive things was the light coming in through the windows to provide natural lighting. I recommend checking this out and spending a few minutes here admiring it.

The basilica of our Lady in Trastevere is an amazing building to visit. Much of what you see inside dates from the 12th Century. The granite columns were taken from ancient Roman buildings, note how they have slightly different heights. The mosaic behind the altar is from the 8th to 10th Century. Notice the intricate design of the ceiling and the floor.
