Create an itinerary including St. Clement Basilica
To see three ancient churches built on top of one another, visit St. Clement Basilica. The present church in this three-tiered complex was erected just before 1100. Beneath it, a fourth-century structure once included a basement meant to serve as a mithraeum, a place of worship for the followers of the ancient mystery religion called Mithraism. Below that structure is yet another edifice, built on the foundations of an even older building that had been destroyed in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 CE. The present church was transformed over the centuries from a private house, once the site of clandestine Christian worship, to a grand public basilica that has been expanded and renovated to reflect the Roman Catholic church's growing legitimacy and power. As you explore, listen for the sounds of the underground river flowing deep beneath the city. • This historic multilayered church records the history of Rome from Early Christianity until the Middle Ages. There are three layers which you can visit. Our group was also lucky enough to have mass...

  • St Clement Basilica was an ok destination. The underground church that lies under the existing basilica is worth checking out but pictures are prohibited. Being underground was a good way to get out of the midday heat so if you plan on exploring this place, I'd recommend going during the day. I would also recommend going on a guided tour because having a tour guide definitely helped explain the significance of the history that lies within this building.
  • Wonderful to be able to go in the tunnels and see the Mithraem temple and the different layers of history. Also loved the sound of the river running underneath. The basilica above is stunning as you would expect in Rome. Very helpful lady in the booking area when I messed up the online booking!
  • A beautiful church in itself but well worth buying the tickets to explore what lies beneath. This church was built on an earlier church, which was built on an earlier place of worship. You can walk down into both lower levels and travel back 2,000 years. Self guided walk-through We booked tickets online beforehand.
  • A beautiful basilica worth visiting in its own right...but an added bonus is a subterranean history, several structures from three different centuries that are intact beneath the 12th-century basilica. These may be visited independently, but I highly recommend paying for a tour of them.
  • The history of Rome in just a monument! Different layers of the city's history one above other. Pagan Rome, mithraic cult, early Christianity, Byzantium, Middle Ages... At the NE chapel there is the tomb of the Thessalonian Saints, Cyril and Methodius, who invented the first Slavic alphabet and undertook missions to spread Christianity among the Slavs on behalf of the Byzantine state. An atrium with a humble fountain is a peaceful spot to relax. Get information about the opening hours, because there is a break in the afternoon. The entrance to the underground levels needs an online ticket and it's not allowed after 12.00, although the monument closes at 12.30. The stuff was not really kind, since they tried to close some minutes before 12.30. This fact does not degrade the significance of the monument though!
