Admire the marble "Porta dello Zodiaco," a 12th-century masterpiece, at Sacra di San Michele. Until recent times, skeletons of dead monks were visible at this large religious complex atop of Mount Pirchiriano. You can still walk up the Stairway of the Dead, which is flanked by arches and tombs. Explore the grounds of the Romanesque church and discover ruins from a monastery and an ancient church. After the winding drive to this area, you'll need to take a short, steep walk up from the parking lot. You must wear modest clothing to enter; you can borrow a shawl to cover your shoulders. Our Sant'Ambrogio di Torino trip itinerary planner makes visiting Sacra di San Michele and other Sant'Ambrogio di Torino attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Visiting this 11th century abbey, constructed upon a mountain not far from Turin, was an experience I shall never forget. It rose like a medieval stone mirage and within the complex are marvelous...

  • Amazing place to visit around Turin, it’s really worth the detour. I recommend doing the way by foot as it is only 2h from under the hill. You see really great views on the way and it is really rewarding.
  • Sacra di San Michele is definitely worth a visit. The Sacra itself is amazing and the view is incredible. It is possible to see as far as Torino on one side and Val di Susa on the other. You can use your smartphone as an audio guide when scanning the QR codes. If you want to visit with your baby it is possible. I would not use a stroller but a baby carrier instead. We had no problem at all with the carrier and were able to visit everything. From the parking lot to Sacra di San Michele and back again took us exactly two hours.
  • Sacra di San Michele Abbey exists since X century. Umberto Eco (1932-2016) the Great Italian scientist and researcher of Medieval monastic life and culture was born not far from here in Alessandria. He was so impressed with Sacra di San Michele that he used its image to describe monastery in his immortal novel "The name of the rose". First church here had been built in 983-987 A. D. Saint Anselm (1033/34-1109) the Bishop of Canterbury who was born in Aosta visited this Abbey where his nephew Anselm the Junior was the monk in 1098. Anselm the Junior (1???-1148) became the Bishop of San Saba in Rome but when he was elected bishop of London that election was quashed by Pope Innocent II (1???-1143). This beautiful place is full of history and very fascinating. Sant'Amrodgio di Torino, Piemont, 🇮🇹 Italy 🇮🇹. September 30, 2018.
  • Beautiful place, giving a great view on Turin and the Alps ! What a surprise to discover the story with the geo alignment with Mont Saint Michel in France, the Saint Michael's Mount in England and Israel.. super interesting!!
  • A must visit in the Piedimonte region. Only about a 40 min train ride from Torino. Honestly the walk up is tough, mostly because the path is paved with horrible rocks that are not good for your stability. Along the trails are a few cool things to see. Making it it the top is quite the pay off the views of the Sacra and Val di Susa are incredible. Enter the Sacra for eight euros, the visit it quite short but if you’ve walked to the top just pay for the visit - you earned it!
