Create an itinerary including Duomo di Siena
Immerse yourself in the city's history and art with a visit to Duomo di Siena, considered one of the country's greatest medieval churches. Built in several stages and combining elements of the Gothic, Romanesque, and Classical architectural styles, the cathedral was consecrated in 1215. The building has the form of a Latin cross, featuring a slightly projecting transept, bell tower, and a dome, parts of which were designed by architect Gianlorenzo Bernini. The cathedral is constructed of white and greenish-black marble in alternating stripes, with red marble added to the facade. Black and white are the symbolic colors of Siena, linked to the black and white horses of the legendary founders of the city, Senius and Aschius. The building also includes a renowned museum of Italian sculpture, displaying works by Donatello, Bernini, and Michelangelo. All-inclusive tickets are available online, providing access to the entire cathedral complex, including the terrace above the museum with its views of the city. • One of the most unique and beautiful cathedrals in Italy. It’s known for it’s stunning dark green (looks black) and white marble. You need to purchase tickets to enter-unless you are going for mass. Mass is free. I recommend a skip the line pass so you can walk right in if it’s busy. I have seen a lot of cathedrals and this is right up there with St. Peters Basilica (Vatican).
  • Before visiting Siena, we knew that Siena was a rich small independent republic, developed even before Florence. We knew they have a great cathedral. But we were astonished when we saw it. Both exterior and interior are super elegant. On the floor are so many colorful engraving paintings, many of them are bible stories. It’s really impressive. We bought combined tickets for cathedral, church museum and the library.
  • A very unique and beautiful church, the most impressive in Siena. It's not too far from the main plaza. The outside is gorgeous and the Vatican inside is a pleasant surprise. There are cool busts of the Popes around the inside of the cathedral. Nice visit!
  • Beautiful! Great to see the old building standing tall in the center of Siena. One side has a café outside where you can admire the architecture, the other side is facing a wide open square. It is definitely worth it to see the inside, too. In the holiday time you will have to wait a while in queue though.
  • Must see. We bought tickets on site. Most impressive is the "Gate Of Heaven" tour up to the cathedral roof and dome. We were lucky we got the 18.30 ticket (last group of the day). We were at the ticket office at 15.30. Pre-order tickets, albeit the late tickets with the setting sun light create an even more spectacular views. There is plenty to do around Siena and 3h will pass like nothing. The Museum offers a panoramic view of the cathedral. All inclusive ticket available for 20€/person. Worth it. I recommend it.
