Legend has it that the designer of Ponte Scaligero arrived at the bridge on horseback so he would be ready to ride away should the structure collapse. The bridge was built at the command of Cangrande II della Scala, a tyrannical ruler who wanted to be able to escape his castle should the people rebel against him. The bridge remained unharmed through many violent struggles until 1945, when retreating German troops destroyed it. It was reconstructed faithfully in 1949 and opened again in 1951. The fortified walkway, now a pedestrian- and bicycle-only bridge, connects two sections of Verona over the Adige River. Yet another breathtaking sight in a city that is a veritable treasure trove of architectural delights. Its brick construction is in contrast to much of Verona. However, it is no less beautiful.

Very interesting bridge that we saw at night when it was all lit up. You can climb up some very small steps to get a better view from the bridge - bit scary climbing back down them with nothing to...

Impressive castle bridge . We approached it from the other side of the river Adige so the view that opened was fantastic.

The bridge retains a lot of its original feel - you can see the way it's supposed to protect the river and it keeps all of its medieval charm. As many bridges around the world, it boasts it's lover's locks, but in here they stay gates covering recesses to old windows, so in a very stable place with little chance of creating real structural damage. Being Verona, you can also find love notes on the walls and ledges, as in so many other places in the city. You can climb on the top part of the bridge for a beautiful view of the city and to make really charming pictures. What else can a tourist want?

Beautiful castle located directly on the river in Verona. Easy to access. Immensely impressive structure with daunting walls which could repel even the most heroic medieval invaders attempting to breach the castle walls Great photo opportunity on the bridge connecting both sides of the river. Be sure to go early to get the best lighting from the rising Verona sun Final take...Go and incorporate a visit here with a full walk along the river.

This is one of those place that you shall not miss. Make sure you spend some good time here and especially on the bridge. Museum is not free of charge but inside you can go and check the castle. Bridge is super amazing.

Nice but lots of tourists. Certainly cross the bridge to see the castle and to visit the higher part of town. Free crossing. 4g coverage is good

This is a must see if you are in Verona, it was the highlight to our trip apart from the arena, you can stop off and sit and gaze out onto the river at the little alcoves along the way and when you get to the other side you can go down to the beach or take amazing photos overlooking the bridge. Most probably there's a good sunset view from here but we ran out of time
