Pay your respects to the deified Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, at Meiji Jingu Shrine, a Shinto shrine surrounded by a forested area crisscrossed with peaceful walking paths. At the temple itself, visitors give offerings, buy amulets and charms, and reflect on and write out their wishes. Walk through the treasure house to see belongings of the emperor and empress, and visit the museum annex next door, which hosts temporary exhibitions. Note that photography is not permitted within the temple’s halls. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Tokyo holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Meiji Jingu Shrine and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

This is truly an oasis of calm & serenity amongst the chaos of the bustling city; it's grounds are stunning & the history behind it is rich and magical. Can highly recommend a visit here.

Friends took us for a visit here. A beautiful walk into the temple… about 10 minutes or so from main gate. Lots of activity going on including wedding photos in traditional dress. If in the area definitely make a stop by. It was also lovely to walk through the park it sits with in.

First Shrine I visited while I was in Japan in Nov. It was a long walk in till you reach the Shrine. You can throw a coin and make a prayer at the main sanctuary (do note you can't take photos/videos of the main sanctuary where people pray as well as the souvenir stalls.) You can also purchase a hanging tablet at ¥500 & write your wishes or gratitude on it to hang near the tree. There's a divine tree that represents good relations of husband and wife. I happened to witness a wedding procession during my visit there, was eye-opening! On your way out, do try the savory Dango sold at Forest Terrace! It's delicious!

Really enjoyed visiting Meiji Jingu while I was visiting Tokyo. I was fortunate enough to go a little bit after it had rained, so it was much less busy than it typically is. If you can go during less popular hours, it really helps to make this place even more of a serene little getaway within Tokyo. It's a great place for a nice walk, and if you're in Tokyo I would definitely recommend checking this place out.

Probably one of the places you have to visit as a tourist. I first saw this place in 2008, during New year eve. And was memorable experience. I’ve visited many times! And always wanted to capture the weddings. The walk there is through some wooded areas, with a nice relaxing vibe. It has other points of interest- cafe, garden, etc.

There were lovely, wide and greenery-surrounded paths to visit the shrine for the late Japanese emperor Meiji. It was fascinating to learn more the history of this relatively new shrine (opened in 1920 I believe) and witness the culture traditions here. The structure in the photo is apparently the largest of its kind in Japan; quite impressive.
