Part of a World Heritage Site and one of the oldest shrines in the country, Ujigami Shrine dates back to 1060. The shrine was supposedly built to honor Uji no Wakiiratsuko, a prince who committed suicide to settle a dispute of the imperial succession. Its nagare-zukuri architectural style features a curved, asymmetrical roof extending above the main entrance to provide shelter for worshippers. Look out for the basin fed by a famous spring, whose water is used for tea ceremonies and is said to have special properties. • Beautiful cherry trees within the shrine area: A must see during the sakura-season. Also beautifully located at the Uji-River - really worth a visit.

  • Ujigami Shrine was famous and easily accessible by visitors. The environment was peaceful but the shrine was small.

  • There are lots of top 10 lists of the popular shrines and temples in the area. As long as one in my immediate geography, it never hurts to spend a few minutes to wander through one; wash your hands.....  more

  • A very serene shrine not far away from the station. Beautiful colors in fall. They also have gorgeous goshuins.
  • Shrine located on a hill accessible with a 5-10 min climb. Very serene and peaceful with more domestic tourists.
  • Really lovely temple set in a small forest. All you hear is nature. Hardly any tourists here too, so you can enjoy this place in peace.
  • This is the hidden world heritage. Not crowded at all, but definately one of the best shrine. They are the oldest shrine structure in Japan. Their structure is really beauriful.
  • Uji isn’t worth visiting. This area isn’t historically associated with good luck anyway. Unpleasant treatment of Uji people will ruin your trip. Better avoid this city.
