Discover prime examples of Imperial Roman architecture at Temples of Baalbek. Colossal columns, intricately detailed stonework, and the integrity and authenticity of its sanctuaries have earned the complex the status of a World Heritage Site. See the delicately carved Corinthian capitals on the Bacchus temple, roof sculptures representing Mark Anthony and Cleopatra, and lions heads on Jupiter's temple. The ancient city started out as a Phoenician sanctuary dedicated to a triad of deities, thrived under the name of Heliopolis during Hellenistic and Roman periods, and reached its peak under the Roman Empire. It suffered a lot of damage over the centuries--from earthquakes, Christian iconoclasts, and Muslim rulers. The stones of the temples were reused many times in the construction of fortification walls and other structures. • Baalbek - one of the biggest and best preserved roman temples still in existence! Very impressive and humbling site. Well worth a visit but keep in mind it gets extremely hot here - honoring its Greek name Heliopolis - city of the sun.
  • A wonder of the world. Fascinating every time. You always learn something new. A must when in Lebanon. Best with a guide, then the stones get stories.
  • Thousands of years of history well preserved and maintained. If you've never had a guided tour I highly recommend it, even having read plenty and visited many times, a well educated guide (as available on site) can make it that much more enjoyable and educational.
  • Perfect Rome temple. Charming view. Amazing history. And the story of this temple in this city since ages till now. You'll enjoy. You can't visit lebanon without passing by this peefect place here. Better to visit it during summer because it's cold weather even at summer.
  • I have been to Rome and seen ruins there but Baalbek was 100 times better. Although the colosseum in Rome is unmatched to anything else in the world, the temples at Baalbek are very well preserved and well taken care of. You can actually walk among the giant columns. It is so photogenic. Take comfortable shoes and lots of water. Absolutely stunning place. The tunnel with all the artefacts was full of information. Easy to spend 1 hour just reading and learning about the place. So proud of the Lebanese people working hard to protect and preserve this place. Keep it up. This is a must visit for anyone visiting Lebanon. Absolutely Gorgeous place. The price to get in is not too much. There are tour guides there for a reasonable sum of money.
