See the medieval Gutenberg Castle, where archeological digs have uncovered the 12 cm (5 in) Mars von Gutenberg figurine. The hillside has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. The castle is perched on a hill about 70 m (230 ft) above the nearby village. Park at the foot of the hill, and climb a path that leads through vineyards up to the castle. The short walk provides views of the neighboring countryside and castle ruins. You can visit the castle's chapel and its rose garden. The bailey is open throughout the year, but the castle interior is closed for visitors. Guided tours need to be scheduled in advance. Beautiful castle. So nice to put ourselves closer to history by enjoying these moments in places with so much known history. We walked around and we could get in because we went really early but the view was beautiful and everything there was so nice, the little walk to get in top of the mountain. Lots of wild animals. The church next to it with the songs from the bell. So nice.

A historical castle located within the Balzers region of Liechtenstein, that is supposed to allow entry to the entire castle for visitors. When we visited on 31 Jul, only the entrance and side area were accessible, and we were not able to proceed into the inner area or into the castle's interior. Still, the castle provides a magnificent viewpoint of the surrounding area and the alps, with stunning view for photo opportunities. The architecture is also quite amazing and suits tourists who are historical and architectural buffs. I recommend visiting the St Nicholas church at the bottom of the hill first, before hiking up the trail next to the church to reach the castle. The hike is quite easy (about 30 minutes), though wearing shoes is recommended. You can take Bus 11 to drop nearby, though you should probably visit other places in Liechtenstein first before making this castle the end of your itinerary before heading to Sargans. Worth a visit, but would not say it's a must as you only can access certain areas plus there are no English signs.

Beautiful view. It's a lovely castle from the outside but seems like it could use some love as it needs some repairs. We couldn't get inside as it was closed.

Beautiful castle stood on a small hill-top with a long and rich history. Do a small walk to get up to the castle and are the town below.

The castle is the main landmark of Balzers and stands there from around 1300. After being owned for centuries by the Habsburgs and briefly by the municipality of Balzers, it was acquired in 1905 by the Vaduz based architect and sculptor Egon Rheinberger, who rebuilt it in romance style giving it the present day appearance. Normally it is not possible to visit the inside, but you could do it through the augmented reality experience of the Liechtenstein Trail app.
